Intel® Atom™ Developer Challenge

 

Description:
The Intel® Atom™ Developer Challenge is a worldwide competition designed to bring out breakthrough applications, ideas and components that fundamentally change the user experience and interaction on netbooks based on an Intel Atom processor.

The recognition and reward elements of the challenge have been reset as of November 10, 2009 to better align with the Intel Atom Developer Program software development kit (SDK) release and development cycle. The 100 netbooks for the first 100 validated netbook applications will be awarded December 7, 2009 through February 2, 2010. The two prizes of a “rock-star treatment” trip to CES on January 7, 2010 are pushed out to a comparable industry event in first quarter 2010, the San Francisco Game Developers Conference on March 9, 2010. The next round of contest prizes and schedule will now be announced at the San Francisco Game Developers Conference on March 9, 2010.   

Submissions will be accepted starting September 22, 2009 through February 2, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. US Pacific Standard Time (PST). Applications will be accepted in the following categories: Home/Lifestyle, Entertainment, Education/ Reference, Utilities/ Security and Games. This is your opportunity to showcase your skills and creativity and potentially win valuable prizes. Official rules and full details are available below.

Definitions:

Component: a building block application (e.g., location services, voice recognition, processing algorithms, etc.) developers can use in their code to accelerate their development.

Application: a software program (including games, productivity programs, Internet based services, and utilities), and all materials related to such application (documentation, screen shots, etc.), designed for use on a device featuring an Intel Atom processor.

To enter:
To enter, please join the Intel Atom Developer Program. The program login is required to enter the contest. By joining in 2009, you’ll be granted free access to the developer program for one year. The developer program provides access to tools and resources to aid in the development of your component or application. By 3:00 p.m. US PST on February 2, 2010, all participants must have uploaded their application or component file to the Intel Atom Developer Program and their detailed application or component abstract, and screenshots of their entry to the Intel Atom Developer Challenge website. Please note the application or component name entered when the application or component was uploaded to the Intel Atom Developer Program must match exactly the application or component name entered in the Intel Atom Developer Challenge entry form in order for the entry to be valid.

The key contest dates and deadlines are below:
All deadlines will occur at 3:00 p.m. US PST. The entries will be made visible on the site once the beta version of the SDK is available on December 7, 2009, and visitors to the site can rate the entries. Judges will not be bound by the visitor rating.

September 22, 2009 through February 2, 2010: Contest registration is open. All participants may enter their detailed application or component abstract, and screenshots of their entry to the Intel Atom Developer Challenge website. Participants must also enter their application or component file to the Intel Atom Developer Program in order for the entry to be considered complete. Please note the application or component name entered when the application or component was uploaded to the Intel Atom Developer Program must match exactly the application or component name entered in the Intel Atom Developer Challenge entry form in order for the entry to be valid.

Starting December 7, 2009:

  1. Download the beta version of the Intel Atom Developer Program SDK for Microsoft® Windows® (C and C++) and Moblin™-based (C only) application development from appdeveloper.intel.com. Please note the alpha version of the SDK is available now, but applications will not be able to be validated by the program until the beta version of the SDK is available December 7, 2009.

  2. Create your component or application designed for netbooks with Intel Atom processors. To qualify for a prize, the entry must consist of an original application or component that is written using the beta version of the Intel Atom Developer Program SDK. The SDK contains instructions, documentation and all necessary tools to enable a participant to build a netbook application for the Intel Atom Developer Program. Any entry that does not use the beta version of the SDK will be invalid, except in the case of open source applications. No SDK is required for open source applications.

  3. Submit your application or component to the Intel Atom Developer Program, appdeveloper.intel.com, and then complete your entry to the Intel Atom Developer Challenge by 3:00 p.m. US PST on February 2, 2010. Please note the application or component name entered when the application or component was uploaded to the Intel® Atom™ Developer Program must match exactly the application or component name entered in the Intel Atom Developer Challenge entry form in order for the entry to be valid.

December 7, 2009 through February 2, 2010: During this time, a netbook featuring an Intel Atom processor will be awarded to the first 100 validated netbook applications submitted to the Intel Atom Developer Challenge.

December 7, 2009 through February 8, 2010:  Every Monday, a panel of Intel judges will select one component received in the prior week (Monday through Sunday) for a $100USD Visa or American Express gift card based on how well it addresses something relatively unique on a netbook platform. The winner will be announced on the challenge website and in the Intel Atom Developer Challenge forum.

February 2, 2010: Contest registration closes and entries are due. By this time, all participants must have uploaded their application or component file to the Intel Atom Developer Program and their detailed application or component abstract, and screenshots of their entry to the Intel Atom Developer Challenge website. Please note the application or component name entered when the application or component was uploaded to the Intel Atom Developer Program must match exactly the application or component name entered in the Intel Atom Developer Challenge entry form in order for the entry to be valid. All entries must be submitted by 3:00 pm US PST.

February 3, 2010 through February 12, 2010: Judging takes place.

February 15, 2010: Winners of the two grand prizes (‘Most Innovative Application ’ and ‘Most Elegant Application Design ’ ) are notified by email. Winning entries will be announced on March 9, 2010.

March 9, 2010: Winners of the grand prizes are announced publicly and on the contest website.

March 9, 2010 through March 13, 2010 (Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, California): Next round of contest prizes and schedule is announced.

Submission Requirements:

Microsoft Windows (C and C++) and Moblin-based (C only) applications will be accepted.

A participant may submit more than one entry. However, each must be substantially unique (at the sole
discretion of Intel) to qualify for this challenge. At the time of entry, the participant must designate one category. All entries must be participant’s original creation. The entries may not be offensive or otherwise unsuitable for use, as determined at the sole discretion of Intel. Participants must comply with Intel Atom Developer Challenge Official Rules, the Intel Terms of Use and the Intel Privacy Policy.

The Application categories are as follows:

Any application or component (or substantially similar application/ component by the same participant) that was entered to the early access Intel Atom Developer Challenge is ineligible to submit again to the Intel Atom Developer Challenge.

At the time of submitting an entry, participants will also need to provide an abstract of the application or component. Screenshots of the application or component may also be uploaded.

All entry materials must be in the English language to qualify.

 

Prizes
The first one hundred (100) applications submitted and validated will each get one netbook with an Intel Atom processor. The winners of these first 100 applications will be announced on the contest website on March 9, 2010.

On March 9, 2010, we will announce one grand prize winner each for the ‘Most Innovative Application’ and ‘Most Elegant Application Design’. Each grand prize winner will receive an all-expense paid trip not to exceed $4,500USD including lodging, roundtrip airfare, $100USD per diem, and admission to the 2010 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, California. Travel arrangements will be made by Intel.

March 9, 2010 through March 13, 2010 (Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, California): Next round of challenge prizes and schedule is announced.
All entries are eligible to win prizes in multiple categories.

Criteria
An Intel panel of judges will identify the first 100 applications that are entered and validated by the Intel® Atom Developer Program. To be eligible for this prize the application entered must have been validated at the Intel Atom Developer Program.

The judges will select grand prize winners in two categories: ‘Most Innovative Application ’ and ‘Most Elegant Application design’. The applications will be selected based on how well they deliver a compelling value proposition on a netbook.  For example, an innovative user interface, a new usage model, a user experience designed for a mobile, always connected audience, and more.

In addition, entries will be judged on the follow criteria:

  • Creativeness: Is the application unique or has it been done before?
  • Quality
  • Visual Appeal

If you are entering on behalf of a team or a business entity, you accept that you have the rights to act as the sole representative for submitting the entry and accepting the prizes. You also accept that you indemnify Intel all claims from its inventors.

If you enter an application or component co-authored by someone else and both parties submit an entry, we reserve the right to disqualify one entry.

Intel Terms of Use 


These rules (including the Intel Privacy Policy, the Intel Terms of Service and the Terms of Use) govern the Intel Atom Developer Program Challenge (the “contest”) and set out the terms and conditions between Intel Corporation and its affiliates (“Intel” or “us/we”) and each participant (“participant” or “you”).

  • You are eligible to participate in the contest if you have registered with the Intel® Atom™ Developer Program at www.appdeveloper.intel.com and/or if you have registered for the contest.

 

  • You must speak, read and understand English and you must be aged 18 years or over or you must obtain the consent of your parents or legal guardian before you participate in the contest. If you apply to register for the contest, if you contribute to the contest or if you accept any contest prizes, you accept these rules. Employees of Intel Corporation, its affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising and promotion agencies, and the immediate families of each may not enter. This limitation is void where prohibited.
  • The contest is open to participants from Intel® Atom™ Developer Program worldwide. All national and local laws and regulations of the resident’s country of residence apply. Residents of countries under U.S. embargo are not eligible to enter. The contest is void wherever else it is restricted or prohibited by law.

 

  • We may refuse your contribution for any good reason.
  • Intel provides you with access to a variety of resources on the Intel Atom Developer Program and related documentation (the “resources”).

 

  • You agree to enter your application or component and all related entries to the contest under the following conditions:
    • Intel does not claim ownership of your application or component and any related entries to the contest in form of sample code, content, videos, articles or any other entries you submit.

 

    • By entering, you grant Intel and its affiliated companies the following worldwide, non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free, unconditional, fully paid-up rights:

(1) to publicly perform or display, import, broadcast, transmit the application or the component and related entries, in whole or in part, for promotional and marketing purposes worldwide in any and all forms of media, whether now known or hereafter devised, and to distribute the application or the component and related entries to Intel affiliates and its marketing agencies for these purposes, and
(2) to publish your name or alias and your application or your component and all related entries in connection with this contest and for marketing and promotional purposes worldwide in any and all forms of media, whether now known or hereafter devised .

    • You warrant that:

• you own or otherwise have all rights necessary for you to provide the application or component and all related entries and you grant the rights described above and you do not disclose any information which would constitute a violation of a confidentiality obligation;
• your application or component and all related entries do not contain any viruses, worms, spy ware, or other components or instructions that are malicious, deceptive, or designed to limit or harm the functionality of a computer; and
• your application or component and all related entries are not subject to license terms that require any software or documentation incorporating or being derived from your entries to be licensed to others.

    • Apart from prizes offered as part of the contest, no monetary compensation will be paid for the application, component and any of your contest entries.

 

    • The application, component and all related entries will not be made available for download by end-users as part of this contest. Participant will be able to register the application with the Intel Atom Developer Program for that purpose.
  • Intel is not responsible for contest entries not received due to lost, failed, delayed or interrupted connections or miscommunications, or other electronic malfunctions. Intel is not responsible for incorrect or inaccurate entry information, whether caused by you or any other persons or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the contest.

 

  • You may be required to sign and return releases of liability, declarations of eligibility, and where lawful, publicity consent agreements, within five (5) days of acknowledged notification. If a selected potential winner cannot be contacted, is ineligible (under these rules or due to a failure to comply with any of the other applicable policies, licenses, rules, and terms of service, fails to claim a prize, or fails to timely return the completed and executed releases/agreements as required), prize may be forfeited and an alternate potential winner may, at Intel’s discretion, be selected. Physical prizes awarded for the winning entries will be sent to participants within six (6) weeks from the date of the notification email or confirmation of the winning participant’s physical address, whichever is later.
  • Prizes are personal to the participant submitting the winning contribution and cannot normally be transferred. All prizes are subject to availability and they may change at any time. Intel may award substitute prizes of equal or greater value.

 

  • The winner accepts responsibility for all federal, state and local taxes and fees in connection with the prizes. The winner shall be solely responsible to obtain all permissions and authorizations to collect and receive the prize in accordance with the laws of the participant’s country of residence. This contest is void where prohibited or restricted by law, and subject to applicable federal, state provincial and local laws. If the winner is a resident of a country in Latin America, cash prizes will be replaced by goods and/or services of equal value in Intel’s sole discretion.
  • Intel does not provide any warranty on the prizes. To the fullest extent allowable by law, Intel specifically disclaims any representations or warranties, express or implied, regarding the prizes, including any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose and implied warranties arising from course of dealing or course of performance.

 

  • We may, on notifying you, immediately suspend or terminate your rights, if you breach these rules or if we reasonably believe that you have submitted a contribution in violation of these rules.
  • Intel reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to suspend or cancel the contest at any time for any reason.

 

  • You can withdraw your entry at any time by notifying us. If an entry is withdrawn your rights to win a prize in this contest are lost.
  • These rules apply to your entry and the resources, unless we provide any items to you under more specific terms, in which case those more specific terms will apply to the relevant items. We may make changes to these rules at any time without notice to you. The most current version of the rules will be provided to the participant with the invitation and it can be requested by email at any time. Contributing to the contest or accepting prizes will constitute acceptance of the revised rules.

 

  • Our only responsibilities with respect to the contest are set out in these rules. These rules prevail in the event of any conflict or inconsistency with any other communications, including advertising or promotional materials.
  • For any feedback or questions regarding the contest or the prizes you can contact Intel by sending an email to appdeveloper.support@intel.com.

 

  • If Intel improperly denies you any prizes, Intel's entire liability and your sole and exclusive remedy will be limited to a distribution of the equivalent amount of prizes as set forth above. By participating in the contest, you waive any and all rights to bring any claim or action related to such matters in any forum beyond one (1) year after the first occurrence of the kind of act, event, condition or omission upon which the claim or action is based.
  • If for any reason this contest is not capable of running as planned due to infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of Intel which corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this contest, Intel reserves the right at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual who tampers with the entry or voting process, and to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend the contest.

 

  • Intel assumes no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line failure, theft or destruction or unauthorized access to, or alteration of entries. Intel is not responsible for any problems or technical malfunction of any telephone network or telephone lines, computer online systems, servers, or providers, computer equipment, software, failure of any e-mail or entry to be received by Intel on account of technical problems, human error or traffic congestion on the internet or at any web site, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to participant's or any other person's computer relating to or resulting from participation in this contest or downloading any materials in this contest.
