DJVuLibre Reader A Winning Netbook App
The following post has been edited by the author to reflect current information about the application. The original post on DJView Reader was removed from AppUp. However this application was originally derived from the open source application of DjVuLibre from Yann LeCun & Léon Bottou. The following information from the original post is reflection of that application.
DjVuLibre Reader is an excellent example of an application that provides value for netbook users. There are many reader applications out there but one thing that sets DJVuLibre Reader apart is that it leverages the DjVu document format. DjVu According to Wikipedia
DjVu has been promoted as an alternative[2] to PDF, as it gives smaller files than PDF for most scanned documents. The DjVu developers report[3] that color magazine pages compress to 40–70 kB, black and white technical papers compress to 15–40 kB, and ancient manuscripts compress to around 100 kB; a satisfactory JPEG image typically requires 500 kB. Like PDF, DjVu can contain an OCR text layer, making it easy to perform cut and paste and text search operations DjVu has been promoted as an alternative to PDF, as it gives smaller files than PDF for most scanned documents
eBook readers can be complex applications, but as we found from "My Little Artist" sometimes the best applications are those that focus on doing a few things well. Such is the case with DJVuLibre.
Leveraging the DjVu open document standard you get a lot of content available to you. I found a public domain list of books pretty easily on the web and found one of my favorite books "A Christmas Carol" from Charles Dickens. I found that the tools for were pretty straight forward similar to PDF viewer in terms of options to view thumbnails and facing page view in the reader view. I also liked that you could change the orientation of the book, allowing a standard netbook to be turned on its side in a more familoar portrait mode for book reading.
Another neat feature is that you can adjust the contrast of the screen to make the experience best for reading. These simple tools gives you help in setting the right contrast for the reader by having you match up a shade of gray with black & white lines.
Developers can learn from this application. DJVuLibre Reader may not be the most feature rich but as a Netbook app but that's not the end game. Netbooks are used as companion device allowing you to break away from "work" computing. This app fits that usage model nicely with enough features to make reading an enjoyable and exciting experience on a netbook
