Introducing the Intel Atom Developer Challenge

My name is Tonya Bowes and I am managing the Intel Atom Developer Challenge. I’ll be posting here about updates to the challenge, milestones, prizes, and cool stories that develop along the way.

I decided to use this first post for a broad overview.

The challenge is all about recognizing and rewarding you for cool components and applications that change the user experience on netbooks. To be eligible for prizes in 2009, you can submit your entry now through December 14, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. PDT.

So, that begs the question, what can you win in 2009? The first wave of prizes is “100 Netbooks for 100 apps” and it’s really simple – if you are one of the first 100 to submit your application and have it successfully validated, you’ll receive a tricked-out netbook. It’s really that easy! There will also be weekly prizes starting November 1st for the best component. The best of all is two grand prize winners – one for most innovative app and one for the best application design- will each receive a VIP all-expense paid trip to CES 2010, including lodging, airfare, admission to the show and a daily stipend.

As an added bonus for participating in the first round of the contest, you’ll receive free Intel Atom Developer Program membership for one year. This membership gets you access to tools and resources to aid in the development of your component or application. You’ll also be one of the first to know of the release date of the SDK.

To get started, just join the Intel Atom Developer Program at http://appdeveloper.intel.com and get a log in ID. Once you have a log in ID, complete the Intel Atom Developer Challenge online registration form with your application or component name and abstract. When your registration form is accepted, you will receive an email containing information on submission deadlines and procedures.

I look forward to seeing your entry! The full details are available at http://appdeveloper.intel.com/en-us/contest/officialrules.

Stay tuned for more updates and good luck!

Tonya (enjoying the Arizona sun and longing for cooler days to come!)

Sounds very interesting. But will the grand prize be only $4500 trip ?

If that's the case, I suggest you increase your budget on this one. Google has done two competitions for Android and prizes ranged from $30,000 to $275,000.
JavaFX prizes were from $5,000 to $25,000 although it was some failure.

Good luck though

Hello,

The first phase of the developer challenge which runs from Sept 22 – Dec 14, 2009 will award the first 100 apps or components submitted and validated with a netbook. There will also be two grand prizes – one for the most innovative app and one for the most elegantly designed app for 2009.

These two grand prize winners will receive an all expense paid trip to CES (Consumer Electronics Show) – they will also receive quite a bit of recognition. We will also award a weekly prize for best component 11/1-12/14/09.

These are the prizes for the first phase of the challenge, which is a slow start to the challenge. Another round of recognition, unique prizes and schedule will be announced in early January. Full details about the challenge can be referenced in the official rules at: http://appdeveloper.intel.com/en-us/contest/officialrules.

Best Regards,

Andre B.

Is this for the best fully developed and debugged app or just the best abstract?

The Intel Atom Developer Challenge will award the first 100 submitted and validated applications with a netbook. There will also be two all expense paid trips to the 2010 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, CA - one for "Most Innovative Application" and one for "Most Elegant Application Design". So, the prizes are based on the actual application or component not just the abstract.

The recognition and reward elements of the challenge have been reset as of today to better align with the Intel Atom Developer Program software development kit (SDK) release and development cycle. The 100 netbooks for the first 100 validated netbook applications will be awarded December 7, 2009 through February 2, 2010. The two prizes of a “rock-star treatment” trip to CES on January 7, 2010 are pushed out to a comparable industry event in first quarter 2010, the San Francisco Game Developers Conference on March 9, 2010. The next round of contest prizes and schedule will now be announced at the San Francisco Game Developers Conference on March 9, 2010.

Please refer to the official rules at http://appdeveloper.intel.com/en-us/contest/officialrules for details about the contest.

Thanks,
Tonya

Hi Tonya,

If I understand this correctly you mean to say the two grand prizes for CES is been replaced by Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, CA ?

Kindly clarify.

Can we send the W-2 and affidavit by email or USPS instead of the 3 defined in the email?

You can certainly send the signed affadavit and W-9 via e-mail to appdeveloper@intel.com, but we still require a signed, original affadavit and W-9. You can send via USPS, but it has to be sent in a manner in which it can be tracked. Thanks, Tonya
