Description

Instructions on how to enable beta testing of applications from within the Intel AppUp(SM) Center.

Introduction

Prior to submitting an application to Intel for validation, developers are encouraged to beta test their application with the Intel AppUp(SM) Center. Performing the beta testing step can help developers uncover issues that would only be found in a production environment and greatly improve the chances for the application to be accepted on the first validation review.

The following procedure details how to enable application beta testing and beta test accounts in the Intel AppUp™ client:

Steps

Developers:

Complete the following steps to enable beta testing of your application:

  1. Initiate the normal process for submitting an application to Intel.
  2. On the Submit Application/Upload Screen, fill out all the required sections and click on the "Beta Test" dropdown box. You should see the following message: “Beta test your application before submitting it for publishing in the store. Simply upload your application's installer file and check back on this page after 30 minutes to invite beta testers for your application"
  3. After 30 minutes, refresh the Upload screen. If the message has not changed, try moving to the "Submit" screen by clicking on the "Next" button. Click on the "Edit" button next to the Upload section. The following message should appear: "Beta test your application before submitting it for publishing in the store. Simply add up to 50 comma separated email addresses of your friends below and if they are existing users of the store they will get free access to your application. While your application is under beta testing, product icon and images are not visible to testers on the store. Once your application is published, images will appear on the store."
  4. Enter up to 50 comma separated email addresses for your beta testers and click the "Invite" button. An "Invitation to testers" message window will appear, allowing you to enter a quick note to your testers. When finished, click on the "Send" button
  5. If your beta testers have existing accounts on the Intel AppUp Center, they should now have access to your beta application.
  6. If your beta testers do not have an existing account, their email addresses will be listed in the "Beta Test" dropdown box along with an option to "Invite to Register". Clicking the "Invite to Register" button will display a message box enabling you to add a quick note and send the beta testing request to your users. Note: If your beta users do not wish to setup a formal account (i.e., enter actual payment information), please include the steps below in your account setup request.

Beta Testers (within the US or Canada):

Users within the US or Canada can participate in beta testing of applications with either a fully registered account or a beta-only test account.

When using a fully registered account simply follow the registration process in its entirety (including payment setup) and let the developer know what email address/username you registered. This will allow you to download/purchase production applications in addition to participating in beta testing.

If you would like to simply create a beta-only test account, please follow the instructions for users outside the US and Canada below.

Beta Testers (outside the US or Canada):

Complete the following steps to enable beta test accounts on the Intel AppUp Center:

  1. Go to www.intelappup.com to download and install the Intel AppUp™ Client Beta
  2. Launch the Intel AppUp™ Client Beta, click on "Sign-in" and complete the required elements of the registration process. Important: You must use the email address from the account you received the beta test invitation.
  3. When prompted for location, register as a US resident.
  4. When the payment information screen appears, click "Cancel"
  5. Now login to Intel AppUp™ Client Beta using the email address/username you just registered.
  6. The beta applications should appear under "Pending Downloads" on the My Apps tab. Important: Beta-only test accounts will not be able to purchase or download free applications from the store.

Known Issue:

While your application is under beta testing, the product icon, application metadata and images are not visible to testers on the store. Once your application is published, images will appear on the store.

Once you complete beta testing, submit your application for validation. If it fails validation, you should upload a new version of your application to beta test it again.

For comments, questions, known issues, work-arounds & community support visit our Beta Test Forum: http://appdeveloper.intel.com/en-us/forums/beta-test-apps

If you submitted an app for validation and it has been rejected, you will need to edit your beta testing request during app submission. Once you fix your app and upload the fixed binary, please remove the account and then add yourself again.

I am not able to see my beta application when i log into appup with my ID that was invited to beta test. when i go into my developer dashboard in the "Appup center" section, it shows "Application: seetheseams" and then "Testing Status: Started". Please let me know what I am doing wrong. I have looked under the "my apps" tab and have searched for the app without any luck.

Thanks,
Kent

I have submitted my application for beta-testing on MeeGo netbook and received an invitation email for beta-testing, but when opening the AppUp client on MeeGo, it's not there.
Am I missing some step?

I have uploaded and submitted my installer file ("Submitted File: Install.msi"), but in the "Appup Center" tab it says "Installer Not Uploaded". I'm using IE 8.0. After uploading I waited cc. 12 hours. Every data is OK, I can start a validation, but not beta test.

Hi adrastea,

In general, the process has changed a little since the website has been updated. Also, when the above article was published the AppUp(SM) Center was only available to US and Canada. Now it is available to a wider variety of countries http://appdeveloper.intel.com/en-us/article/faq#pay_00 If you are using the AppUp(SM) in any of the supported countries you need to select your respective country.

Also, since that date, some features of the AppUp(SM) Center has also changed a bit. There is not longer 'Pending Downloads' section. Normally when you have been invited to beta test application, it will appear in your 'My Apps' section on the AppUp(SM) Center.

Let us know if you are still having issues.

I have troubles with step (6):

The beta applications should appear under "Pending Downloads" on the My Apps tab. Important: Beta-only test accounts will not be able to purchase or download free applications from the store.

I have created an US account etc. with the same e-mail address that I invited for betatesting but my beta App is not listed under "Pending Downloads" nor I found anything to download the beta app.

What went wrong?

Hi,

Thank you for your feedback.
It works fine on Internet Explorer 8 as well as on Firefox 3.6. We noticed that sometimes it may not work as expected on other browsers.

Hi,

Have you tried on a different browser? I have tested in on Internet Explorer 8.0 and Firefox 3.6.9 and it seems to be working fine.
Also make sure that the person you are inviting is already registered on the AppUp(SM) Center.

Let me know if you are still having issues.

Hi FR,

Earlier this week there have been some updates done to the website and the submission process has changed a bit from the previous one. For Beta testing you now need to have successfully uploaded you application and submitted the file, then go to the next step 'AppUp Center', there you will see the options to start beta testing.

If you have just uploaded the file, it might take some time for the application to be ready for beta test. So you may come and check again later.

Once it is ready for beta testing, you will see the option to invite beta testers and to start beta testing. Please note that you can only invite people who are already registered on the AppUp(SM) Center to perform beta testing.

The beta testers will receive the invitation email and they can log-in to the AppUp (SM) Center and find your application under Pending Downloads.

Please note: If you have not successfully uploaded and submitted you application, you will not be able to perform beta testing.

If you are having any issues and need further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact us back.

Rooven

Hi all,

i try to submit my app for beta testing...
In the "Beta testing" information page,(http://appdeveloper.intel.com/en-us/article/beta-testing),
i read:
"2. On the Submit Application/Upload Screen, fill out all the required sections and click
on the "Beta Test" dropdown box"...

I don't see that "Beta Test" dropdown box"!

Anyway, i upload my msi file with success 'Browse the msi + clic the 'Submit files' button".
I got the "Submitted File: myApp.msi" message, and go to the next "AppUp center" page.
Waiting a few hours, saving/exiting... and updating the page, nothing happen.

Is it a way to know the status of my app. during the beta-test phase?
Is there a special place to download my app, and ensure the beta-test is done in a 'real' (certified) AppUp context.

Thanks.
FR

Hi Jupiter 7,

On this link you will find a little video which I made on the steps to follow for inviting somebody for beta testing: http://appdeveloper.intel.com/en-us/node/1415#comment-4391

Hope it helps.

Please note that currently there may be some issues during beta test invitation and the beta tester may also not receive the invitation email. The backend team is working on getting this issue fixed as soon as possible.

In the meantime I would recommend you to preferably use Internet Explorer 8.0. We have experience the issues mostly on Firefox browsers.
Also it should be noted that the beta tester must already been registered on the AppUp(SM) Center. Even if they do not receive the invitation email, the application will still be available for them to download and perform the beta test. The application should appear under pending downloads.

Rooven

I have added my application for beta testing but I do not see it. The workflow for getting your app in a beta testing state is terrible. Does anyone have a step by step guide to getting it to work. Do I stop and save at the upload step once I have uploaded? This has not worked for me. Any assistance would be appreciated. Also, invites are not being sent, is this issue resolved yet?

The beta testing workflow is a little difficult to follow and use. It took me 24 hours or so before I was actually successful getting my application onto my first beta test machine. That said, it was very helpful in diagnosing and verifying a couple of issues in my product.

One annoyance for me is that the notifications portion of the beta test functionality doesn't appear to be working. My beta testers never received invitations to download/participate in the beta test. I'd like to invite a few others to be beta testers in the future, and it would be great if this gets sorted out.

Hi Roderick,

Thank you for your feedback.

If you do not wish to proceed with the payment you can go back or close the Registration Screen.

The Intel® AppUp(SM) is still a beta version. Many more fixes and enhancements will be brought on future releases/builds.

We are more than happy to hear your comments and feedbacks about your experience using the interface.

I will pass the information to the development team for consideration.

Rooven

There is no "Cancel" button on the payment information screen. Only "Back" and "Submit".
